World’s Fastest Things

What is speed? Speed is the rate at which an object is able to operate. Many people have broken the sound barrier over the course of history. So we here at The Superlative have researched and would like you to know about the fastest things in the world. So let’s begin!

1. Usain Bolt

Usain Bolt is an individual from Jamaica who currently holds the record of the fastest man alive. He is the only individual in history to get gold medals in100 meter and 200 meter awards in the Olympic Games. His greatest accomplishment is making the record of running at a speed of 44.72 Km/h. This record is still unbeaten and Usain remains the fastest man on the globe. He made the record of running 100 meters in 9.58 seconds! Tens of people have challenged him but he always ended victorious. He was quite unpassionate about his running in the start but as the time increased, and he started to make records, his coaches motivated him and the rest is history.

2. K-222 Submarine

Usually, boats and submarines are very slow and their usual speed is never more than 30 to 35 miles. But Russians like to break the rules right? So they made a submarine named K-162 renamed K-222 back in 1958 when Russia was USSR. This submarine holds the record for the fastest submarine on the planet. It officially reached up to speeds as much as 51.4 miles per hour. However unofficially, it has reached up to flashing speeds of 51.61 miles per hour.

Its hull is made of titanium. It was armed with Starbright missiles which brought down destruction upon the enemy. Faster than Usain Bolt, and that too in water where maximum speed is very less, it was a disaster for the enemy and joy for the Russians. However, due to its high cost, it was put in the reserves in the 1980s and now is not present in the Russian Navy Fleet.

3. Peregrine Falcon

This amazing bird is the fastest of all the animals in the animal kingdom. It is faster than the famous cheetah and even a gazelle. When spotting prey, it can dive at an astonishing speed of 200 mph. This makes it even faster than conventional trains. When flying leisurely, it can go up to 242 mph! It has an average wingspan of 99 cm which is quite small compared to other eagles such as the Bald Eagle which has a wingspan of 230 cm. Despite its small wings, it is the fastest bird found on the planet. It is a carnivore and eats other small birds such as doves, pigeons, and sparrows. It nests on cliff-like areas which gives them area to dive at the amazing speeds easily.

4. Bugatti  Veyron EB 16.4

11 years ago, the Volkswagen Company launched out mid-engine fast cars which are now known as the Bugatti Veyron EB 16.4. It is a series of cars. They are currently the fastest cars existing on the planet.

The original model has the record of reaching a speed of 407 kilometer per hour. Another car of this series named as The Super Sport Version which has the excellent capability to reach a mind-boggling speed of 431.072 kilometer per hour and this speed is specifically recorded by The Guinness World Book of Records so nobody can challenge it, and who can? One more car known as the Grand Sport Vitesse can go to speeds up to 429.695 kilometer per hour and can accelerate from 0 to 60 in a matter of 2.4 seconds.

The cars can be overall frankly be called as ‘Luxury combined with extreme thrill’.

5. JR-maglev train

This train is present in Japan and is officially named as the fastest train in the world. It has a maximum speed of 600 kilometer per hour. Never a train has been so fast. You must have watched the scene in ‘Back to the Future’ where the protagonist strives to make the train go 80 mph which is about 128 kilometers per hour.

This train flashes before your eyes before you even notice it and is more than five folds faster than conventional trains. It travels a distance of 502 kilometers in 67 minutes! It hovers six feet above the ground and uses electro-magnetic force to

propel forward at these high speeds. It costs the government more than 9 trillion yen. But Japan isn’t too much affected or for that matter stressed out by it. Its Japan, how could it be affected by a puny 9 trillion

6. Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird

This aircraft has held this record since it was first produced by Lockheed Martin in 1976. While unbelievable, it can go up to a speed of 3529.6 kilometer per hour. And it takes 2 pilots in the cockpit too. It travels about 59 kilometers in a SINGLE minute! And if you are calculating per second, it covers 3349.31 feet in a second. IT travels more than 3 times faster than the speed of sound.

It flies so high and so fast that pilots wear special helmets and suits which are similar to those worn on space shuttles. It is so fast that enemy ground-to-air missiles are unable to lock it and shoot it down because it simply moves out of their range as soon as the enemy radars pick it up. Imagine going to space which is 11 kilometers from the ground in less than 10 seconds.

7. BrahMos missile

This missile was developed in a joint-venture between the Russian Government and the Indian Government. This deadly missile can go up to 3 times faster than the speed of sound. This equals around 3281.5 kilometers per hour. This missile is even faster than the previously mentioned aircraft.

Moreover, the missile can be attached to a jet aircraft as well such as an SU-30 MKI (pronounced as MI-KH-O-I) which both the Russian and Indian Government possess. BrahMos, when fired from these aircraft, can reach a target which is present more than a thousand kilometers away! Its accuracy is pin point and it doesn’t ever go astray from its path for even a single inch. It goes three times faster than speed cruising just 5 meters away from the sea waves and protrudes out when the target is near.

8. Helios B

Helios B was an unmanned space ship made by the Germans (70%) and by NASA(30%). It was sent out to orbit and observe solar movement. It has set a

record for the fastest spacecraft flying at the speed of 252,800 kilometers per hour. At this speed, the spacecraft covered 98,900 meters per SECOND!

It made the closest pass to Sun ever recorded (until Parker Solar Probe broke its record in 2018). It zoomed at the speed of 70 kilometers per second. It went far as 43.5 million kilometers from Mother Earth to observe the Solar movements. It was launched in the first month of 1976. It is very hard to believe right? Imagine you’ll go from New York to Las Vegas which is about 4069 kilometers in less than a minute! In less than A MINUTE! Absolutely unbelievable guys!

9. Juno Spacecraft

Juno Spacecraft is currently the fastest man-made object. It was made to orbit and land on Jupiter.  When it enters Jupiter’s orbit, it gives it a speed boost and it gets faster until the spacecraft achieves a speed of 250,000 kilometers per hour. That it about 150,000 miles per hour.

It traveled a distance of 2.8 billion kilometers once it reached Jupiter. This distance is about 19 times more than the distance between Earth and the Sun. Its mission is to orbit around Jupiter 37 times and it is performing its mission perfectly up till now. We wish it a safe and an ‘interesting’ voyage. *wink*

  10.Light

The fastest thing that exists and is proved by scientists, as you all know, is Light. Light travels at a speed of 299 792 458 m/s or more precisely 30,0000 kilometer per second. If we were to travel at the speed of light, our mass would become infinite and we would turn into energy. If you travelled at the speed of light, you would circle the Earth 7.5 times in a single second!

The sun is 151.16 million kilometers far away from the Earth. Yest light is so fast that the sunlight reaches us in a mere 8 minutes 20 seconds. If you were to be looking at the sun at 9 AM, you would actually be seeing the sun which was blazing at 8:52 AM. It is the most amazing speculation ever!
